OLA continues to offer its membership a diverse network of business to business opportunities as well as a superb directory of organic land care companies who have adopted an adherence to practice without using any form of harmful pesticides. I personally believe that the OLA provides invaluable service to Ontario homeowners and green businesses. I support their endeavours as acting interim vice-president. Our AGM is upcoming before spring and I invite all of you to support the OLA through memberships, donations and/ or volunteering.

The Farmers’ Take on Urban Edible Gardens

I follow a general guideline for my new and existing edible garden clients.
To meet my objectives, the new or existing edible garden must hold these qualities:

  • an objective
  • a focus and orientation
  • a foundation in organics and human nutrition
  • plant specifics
  • garden design and install
  • garden maintenance
  • on going garden sustainability
  • and urban garden support systems

Every client has a unique goal, a unique understanding and vision, and a unique direction in which they want to go in regards to the above components.
The above framework allows us to work with the client progressively to create a well managed edible garden that produces a lot of tasty food while continuously decreasing the ecological footprint. Over the seasons and years, we observe while we garden so as to integrate ongoing improvements and modifications that reflect the sites’ unique needs and conditions.

At The Greener Side our focus is on functional urban edible gardens and property landscapes maintained with little or no power tools.
On occasion upon consideration, we suggest and/ or out-source other property modifications that improve and streamline related energy systems, such as rain water collection, solar power, geo-thermal, composting and so forth.

We strongly believe that healthy and beautiful greenery along with fresh food grown on site is a key way to live naturally and harmoniously.
We are proud and honoured to be part of this exciting collaborative effort of making a difference through uplifting and continuous activity with the natural world.

In creating and preserving a natural, beautiful outdoor space, you contribute to a just and harmonious world.

Seeking organic restaurant-caterer to partner with local producer for sales-marketing at Brickworks Farmer’s Market

We are looking for a local restaurant-caterer to prepare our ultra fresh, local produce for Saturdays’ Market at The Brickworks.
Joint booth available with The Greener Side, an organic ornamental-edible gardening company.

After our day job, we grow 2500 sq ft of healthy organic produce for fun, at our house, and our neighbours’. We grow too much, so this year we want to grow for and with a cutting edge restaurant/ caterer. The food for the market can be custom grown for you, harvested 6-7 am the morning of market, and is available throughout the week as well.

This is an ideal cross-marketing project that highlights your social and ecological commitment. Promote your business preparing and selling healthy organics as we promote our business growing organics.

The Urban Edible Garden Coursebook

I am currently in the process of writing a new book called The Urban Edible Gardening Coursebook.
I will be drawing upon my personal experience commercially growing organic vegetables on large, mid size and small plots, in Ontario, British Columbia and Guatemala, as well as from my research, reading and attended courses over the last 13 years.

The coursebook will include:

  • coursebook objective, summary, focus and orientation
  • foundation of urban edible gardens
  • edible plant specifics
  • edible garden design and install
  • edible garden maintenance
  • on going edible garden sustainability
  • urban edible garden support systems

The book is a comprehensive skeleton covering all the components of urban agriculture. It emphasizes the bigger picture, addresses system components as well as offers practical detail on how to set up urban gardens of all size ranges. Garden layouts examples with crop rotations, successions and maintenance schedule will be included. If you are a first time or seasoned grower, or facilitator or educator, this book will show you how to grow well, consistently and sustainably, from garden sizes of 10 sq ft to 4500 sq ft.

To give an idea of the tone of the book, the following are some of the influences that have contributed to shaping and inspiring my practice:

Permaculture, Biodynamics, Co-Creative Gardening, CSA’s, Analog Forestry, Small Intensive Edible Gardens (SPIN), SLOW, 100 mile diet, 100 foot diet, and more!
