When you need a new gardener, or need to replace your old one, feel free to entrust your property to experienced hands that leave no plant untouched.
Experience means garden wisdom, along with the knowledge of timing. Knowing when to cut the plant and by how much helps create and keep that perfect look.

Many homeowners neglect the finer details due to limited time in the garden, while many companies cut corners due to scheduling and contract conflicts.
Rest assured, our meticulous maintenance is always complete.

We offer optional outsourcing for electric mowers & blowers for large properties only.

Detailed Artisanal Greenwork

back to thegreenerside.ca

We artistically remake used products into custom garden installations.

The Greener Side sticks to its name when we say we upcycle waste products. And why not?
There is no good reason we shouldn’t be using perfectly useable plastic and oak barrels, wine pails and wooden wine crates.

As long as it looks nice, we will use re-use the product. And on the topic of appearance we have a range of customizations available for your discerning taste.

Our new 225 litre vertical planter, called YUG for Your Urban Garden, naturally comes in terra cotta colour. Blue is available for smaller container sizes. If blue or orange is unappealing we can tile or paint the barrel as you like.
For example a disco planter is perfect for balconies. Comes with mirror tile on a vertical planter, complete with wheels or turntable for 360 degree rotation.

The sky’s the limit for your plants when you have the right containers to hold them, the right soil to make them prosper and the right vision to make it work for you!

Organic Urban Agriculture

Providing full service edible garden expertise.

  • design
  • timeline sketches
  • installation
  • maintenance
  • coaching
  • coursebooks
  • bulk organic soil

Our resident edible garden expert has 8 years experience running and managing mixed crop organic farms in Ontario, BC and Guatemala.
6 years experience in back yard and restaurant gardens adds to the portfolio.
The Greener Side’s first gardening book, due end of March 2010, is meant to help simplify the artful science of urban agriculture, and to help start the process of skill transfer.
“Your Urban Edible Garden Coursebook” completes our edible garden portfolio.

Farming is rarely a prosperous endeavour, so over the seasons, great skill was gathered in growing well on a shoe-string budget.
Time spent in Toronto back yards has also shown us how to make vegetable gardens look like a vision from a dream come true.

Whatever the budget, we design, install and maintain urban edible gardens with the skill to make them grow right, and the vision to make it look right.

The urban edible gardens we work with generally range from 5 to 2500 sq feet. VIDEO LINK

Natural Plant and Soil Health Programs

back to thegreenerside.ca

A garden is only as good the plants in it. Taking care of the plants in your garden requires a functioning health strategy that’s both preventative and corrective. Ensuring overall vitality and health goes a long way towards preventing future plant health issues.

Preventative plant care comes as:

  • proper pruning
  • quality soil and plants to create a healthy soil food web
  • proper plant location
  • watering to match the plants needs

Corrective plant care comes as:

  • plant cut backs
  • garden makeovers and plant relocation
  • solid and liquid applications to deter bugs and combat disease

We offer all of the above as part of our services.

In particular,

The Greener Side Preventative-Corrective Organic Plant Health Programs have been created to naturally prolong the quality and longevity of the plants in your garden.
We use an array of natural products to create our custom plant health applications for your garden.

Our regular program is a season long preventative mix that builds up the immunity of the plants, enhances microbial activity in the soil, and is best used in conjunction with recommended top dressing.
Our custom program is everything above plus the added service of offering corrective spray mixes as needed on an ongoing basis.
This is useful when you know you have a certain bug or disease issue every year and want help with it.
Our one time program is a combination of solid and liquid organic fertilizers to help bring your garden back to life and back to balance.

The ingredients we use in our organic amendments are:
Organic Worm Compost
Earthworms
Plant Growth Stimulators such as Kelp, Alfalfa, Mycorrhizal Fungi
Purified water
AACT (Premium Composts blended with Inoculants, Fulvic Acid, Humic Acid, Kelp)
Ocean Minerals

and

Professionally servicing your gardens’ health naturally.

  • preventive programs and corrective applications
  • EM (Effective Micro-organisms)
  • minerals, rock dusts and other organic amendments
  • worm castings
  • AACT
  • indoor-outdoor composters

True organics by default equals sustainability. But when organics are trucked in from half way around the world, is the benefit defeated?

We start by taking your lawn and garden off of drugs by amending and treating the soil and plants with all organic inputs.
After we correct deficiencies in the soil and garden we then offer

  • preventative plant health programs
  • on site methods of generating and sustaining plant and garden health, such as companion plantings and indoor-outdoor composters.

Once your garden produces its own plant food and sustains itself from within, you have a self-regulating and sustainable garden. To complete this process takes at least 2-3 years.

Almost Spring- COG Conference Saturday, Seedy Saturday this Sunday

We’re gearing up for spring and some of us can’t wait! Strangely enough for me, I’m totally cool with the cold as it’s giving me the time needed to complete the last sections of my upcoming gardening book.

The Greener Side will have a booth at 2 important, useful and inspiring events this weekend, for all of those edible garden and organic food lovers.

The first event is the COG Conference on Saturday. http://www.cogtoronto.org/COG_Toronto/Conference_February_2010.html

Located downtown at 89 Chestnut St, it is a one day event promoting the organic options in food production and consumption. The COG Conference is always a great place to learn and network with avid foodies.

The second event is Seedy Saturday which this year is on Sunday. http://www.tcgn.ca/wiki/wiki.php

Located at the Green Barns, Seedy Saturday is a word wide late winter event promoting organic, open pollinated seeds and garden supplies. Last years’ event was absolutely bonkers, so I’m kind of thinking it will be nuts as well this year. Bring elbow pads.

We will have a simple display this year showcasing our range of services. We will have the basic version of our Urban Garden on display as well as some Dew Worms, and our Organic 5 Way Mix. We look forward to answering your questions and signing up new clients for 2010. Don Moffatt will be on board on Sunday to offer his take on organic ornamental gardening in Toronto.

See you there!

Chris MacLuckie Work Bio

Chris MacLuckie aka “The Farmer” work bio:

I have had the privilege to work in a wide range of food production settings over the last 13 years.

I bring a diversity and depth of relevant experience to The Greener Side clients, and, coupled with my senior employee Don Moffatt’s equally rich ornamental landscaping background, feel solidly confident addressing most if not all plant and garden requirements.

We are proud and grateful for our respective backgrounds, even more so as we attended high school together, and after 17 years apart have now become re-acquainted as professional work colleagues.

In 2010 we look forward

  • to fixing up and maintaining gardens for the discerning and appreciative enthusiast;
  • to installing creative masterpieces;
  • to improving our edible garden projects through increased harvests, participation and skill-sharing;
  • to expanding our public outreach through apprenticeships, training, coaching and workshops, and community and inter-business partnerships.

The Greener Side Head Gardener Don Moffatt

I have been a Gardener in your neighbours gardens for nearly fifteen years. I am most at home when elbow deep in rich Rosedale / Forest Hill soil. I have made a living in the most beautiful gardens in our amazing city; and as a result am quite privileged to have the chance to leave my mark on our beautiful city. I draw upon a wealth of knowledge gained through working with some of our industry’s most talented Gardeners. My strength is my willingness to learn, adapt, and change with the trends and environmental adversities presented on a daily basis. I love my work…as it is my craft. I have created an environment beneficial to my customers, my associates, and my plants. Gardening is more than just plants; it is trust and love. My love for the work, for the people and for the spirit of our earth; this is my drive.

I am a Gardener and proud of it.

“The world would be a better place if we were to just accept that we are where we ought to be…”
