Expansion
We have decided that my 100 page manuscript wasn’t enough to create a complete book. It is with great honour that I have been able to call on respected colleagues from culinary arts, naturapathic medicine, as well as integrated pest management to help provide the content to make our Urban Edible Gardening Coursebook Complete.
From how to design, set up and plant an edible garden, to maintaining plant health and preventing and correcting diseases and infestations, to growing the food you want because you know the nutritional make-up, to timely harvests and year round and yearly success, and to preparing it in ways your friends and family will envy, our Coursebook aims to set a standard in information and support.
Timeline
We aim to have our first copies in our clients homes as a heartfelt thank you and trial run in Fall 2010.

Vertical Planter Barrels = Farms in The City
August 15, 2010 at 3:19 pm (E) products, Edible Gardens by The Farmer, F) research & development, G) New at The Greener Side)
Origins
In 2007 and 2008, we grew for fun at the 111 Glen Long Experimental Garden. Every year the planting arrangement was different, but every year one thing stayed the same. THE BINDWEED. OH, The BINDWEED.
Well, what does that have to do with used olive barrels with holes in the side?…
The bindweed was most active and destructive around the fenced edge of my friends’ 1200 sq ft garden. So to finally use the space the bindweed usually stole, we decided to cover the inside perimeter and inside fence with black greenhouse fabric. To weigh it down, I knew that 22 litre pails with soil/ veggies, would be inadequate.
We needed something bigger and heavier, to not topple in the wind. We decide to use barrels, but not just any barrel. Barrels with the sides ripped outside.
Hence the very successful vertical planter barrel, or Your Very Own Farm in the City!!!
Success Stories
We have had great success with the vertical barrels. As they are quite large (180-220 litres) they can sustain a lot of plants. The biggest requirement is adequate watering in hot summers. Other than that, diseases, weeds and pests are minimized due to above ground growing conditions. Growth is greater at beginning and end of year, especially beginning, as the soil warms up quicker. We have had great results with most types of edible annuals, as well as many ornamental annuals. Our greatest success story is that people now have a large urban garden where before they had nothing.
Uses
We have seen the following plants grown with success in the large barrels:
potatoes
strawberries
zucchini
cucumber
tomatoes
peppers
all brassicas
chard
carrots
beets
basil
parsley
perennial and annual herbs
flowers of all kinds
The planting arrangement, combined with soil chosen, and watering technique, affects quality of growth and visual presentation.

Our barrels are available by special order.
1 unit sells for $75.
We also sell the barrels installed with new seedlings and seed (starting at $250) as well as pre grown for an insta-garden (starting at $260)
