March Greetings from thegreenerside

Happy March everybody,

We are actually feeling the excitement of the longer days. How about you?
Now we just have to wait a little longer for the warmer weather…

This time we will be talking about two of our cost saving strategies for your natural garden oasis.

“Grow Your Own Food and Prosper” and “Go Native and Save Money and Water”

“Grow Your Own Food and Prosper…”

“Go Native and Save Money and Water”

One of the best ways to keep your garden healthy is to integrate plants that grow easily and provide natural pest control. The plants that grow best for any site are generally the ones that naturally occur in our southwestern Ontario eco-systems. These plants are native perennials. Similar to companion planting for edibles, native perennial landscaping takes it a step further by introducing hardy plants well suited for years of trouble free growth.

Not only are native perennials easy to grow, they also

Attract butterflies and birds
Attract beneficial (predator) insects

Very useful as part of a sound integrated pest management strategy…

Examples of Native Perennials:

  • Goldenrod (Solidago): Goldenrod is a companion plant, playing host to some beneficial insects, repelling some pests.
  • Butterflyweed (Asclepias tuberosa): The common name comes from the butterflies that are attracted to the plant by its color and its copious production of nectar. Butterfly weed is also the larval food plant of the Queen butterfly.
  • Yarrow (Achillea millefolium): Drought tolerant plant with long history as a powerful ‘healing herb’ used topically for wounds, cuts and abrasions.
  • Angelica (Angelica sylvestris): Heightens the immune system. It has been shown to be effective against various bacteria, fungal and viral infections.
  • Echinacea (Echinacea): Echinacea is popularly believed to be an immunostimulator, stimulating the body’s non-specific portion of their immune system and warding off infections.

Pricing:
Examples of native perennial landscape design and set-up

$ 2.50 sq ft and up Lawn replacement and bed set up
$ 7.00 sq ft and up Design, set-up, check up/servicing on all new installations

(Note: these prices are subject to a written estimate with concept sketch and planting plan, based on your tastes, customized for your space)

Benefits of Native Perennials:

  • Less maintenance costs
  • Less plant replacement
  • Less watering
  • Attracts butterflies, birds and beneficial predator insects.

Natural Lawn and Garden Fertilization Programs

Natural Lawn and Garden Fertilization Programs

Description of our Services

  • We take your lawn and garden off of drugs. We replace chemical fertilizers with natural, organic and locally made fertilizers that immediately enliven the soil and over time harmonize the soil-plant ecosystem into its own living balance.

What is Natural, and What is Organic?

  • Everything’s natural and organic these days, isn’t it? Or is it?…
  • Plant or animal based fertilizers are generally organic, but not always. Sometimes the way something is processed make s it organic or not.
  • Natural means to us that the area at hand follows a rhythm already occurring in nature.
  • Our locally produced worm compost mimics nature using organic ingredients. First we take animal manure and mix it with their feed and bedding, along with water. After a few months we then feed the worms in a vertical flow thru vessel that mimics the way worms naturally feed in nature. Finished product is then aged for 6 months before using on your lawn and garden.

The Multi-Year Process

  • Imagine a child that needs guidance and time to mature into an autonomous adult. If you need our services, then your garden is like a child of some age or another, needing the right influences to make it on its own.
  • By applying appropriate organic nutrients at the right time, we optimize proper development of your unique ecosystem.
  • The first year of the fertility program is the most intensive, as the effects of chemical fertilizers and neglect must be counteracted. We analyze the soil quality and vigour of the plants to determine how much organic compost to lay down. We soak the soil in spring and fall with our specially prepared organic AACT (remember? see above) and apply foliar sprays 5 times during the year.
  • Progress is observed and we then prescribe an appropriate 2nd year program. It’s usually less intense, with less top dressing and less frequent sprays. By the third year a top dressing may not be necessary, and the liquid fertilizers are applied 3-5 times.
  • Our fertility program goes hand in hand with our garden design and set-up service. Why? Because you may have the best plant in the world, but maybe it’s just not suited to the site. We recommend easy growing plants that make fertilization less necessary.

Benefits of Going Organic

  • Healthy home, healthy environment. Less pollution, less disease. Closer connection to nature.

Lawn and Garden Questionnaire

  • What part of your lawn and garden do you like the best?
  • What kind of plants do you want to grow?
  • What themes or designs do you like?
  • What results would you like to see?
  • What needs help or special attention?
  • What would you like to get rid of?
  • How much time do you like to spend on your garden each week?

  • What’s your project and/or yearly budget? 200, $300, $500, $1000, more?
  • When do you want to get started?

Pricing

  • Sprays with our organic SOS Foliar start at $60 per application. Seasons run at $350 and up for 7 applications including spring and fall soil soak.
  • Top dressing runs from $75 and up.

Success Stories

  • 92 Empire Toronto. The native perennial garden was sprayed with AACT 7 times in 2007. Top dressing was not applied due to the heavy wood mulch. Growth was lush and greater than expected by the owner. Next year, the garden will be sprayed 5 times to begin the weaning off portion of the program.

Oasis: Fully Integrated Composting System Set-Ups

Riverdale Farm Composting

Oasis

We’re begun promoting our integrated composting system set-ups this fall.

We help individuals, businesses and community groups with strategies to capitalize on their organic waste. By implementing pin-pointed processes, we ensure that their organic waste stream is going to the best possible use. As in a local lawn or garden.

Examples of small system set-ups are the various types of home composters that can be used seasonally, or year round, inside or out. There’s a indoor-outdoor worm composter called the Worm Factory that we sell. It takes about 10 minutes of work every two days. To harvest the finished product requires no turning, sifting, sorting, etc.

Very useful at

A) reducing the waste stream with no carbon miles involved.

B) creating ideal plant food for all of your needs.

The finished product from this composter and the larger mid-scale solutions will enrich your life by servicing your lawn, garden and farm needs naturally through recycling and re-using.

Mid-scale solutions display higher volume turnover, pricing and complexity. There is a system for all kinds of infrastructures and establishments. Restaurants, community centres, farms, garden centres, co-ops, schools, etc could all benefit from composting on site.

Recyling on site makes sense. Economically and environmentally.

Reusing on site makes sense too, but only if you have a place (plants) to use the compost.

thegreenerside helps our clients with strategies for productive gardens that combine the 3 essences of economy, ecology, and aesthetics. So, you begin to recycle your waste consciously, then you use it with a clear purpose and direction, to achieve tangible results such as food, medicine, or relaxation.

This is our new service called Oasis.

leaf mold compost

leaf mold compost

For the mid scale composter, it’s not just matter of buying or making the right composter.

Other relevant factors include pre-loading storage area, pre-loading blending, waste turnover time, storage-curing area, sifting technologies and so forth.

thegreenerside helps our clients navigate though the maze of organic options out there and we enjoy the process of discovering the ideal outcome of each situation.
